Planting Tips for Heirloom Tomatoes:
Start heirloom tomato seeds indoors in an Organic sterile potting mix, keeping the temperature above 70 degrees, not letting the vegetable seeds dry out prematurely or overwatering. Using a seedling grow pad with a grow light system is ideal.
Once the first true leaves appear on your tomato seedlings, transplant into 4″ pots until you have completely hardened them off in the garden. Hardening is a process of exposing the plants gradually to outside temperatures until they are hardy enough to tolerate a being transplanted.
Most heirloom tomato varieties are quite productive and the plants should be supported by using tomato cages and supports. Throughout the growing season tomatoes benefit from using OMRI Certified Organic Tomato Fertilizers or good old fashioned compost.
